Earlier reports from Bloomberg suggested that we would see the iWatch with in the next 9 months but now The Verge has added to the story and said that the new iWatch will run a version of iOS.

The iWatch project is said to be managed by Jony Ive along side a team of around 100 product designers. It is reported that they have made the decision to rework the full iOS to run on the watch instead of working with a version like the one which currently runs on the iPod Nano.

A problem they have bumped in to is battery life, nobody wants to have to charge their watch up all the time so the goal for the iWatch is 3-4 days with out charge and this is a couple of days short of what the current prototypes are getting.
